Miosan: what it is for, how to take it and side effects

Miosan is a muscle relaxant that contains cyclobenzaprine in its composition that acts by increasing muscle relaxation by blocking nerve impulses or pain sensations that are sent to the brain and that cause muscle contractions, spasms or pain. Thus, it is indicated for the treatment of muscle pain caused by fibromyalgia, torticollis or arthritis, for example.

This remedy can be found in pharmacies and drugstores in boxes with 10 or 30 pills of 5 or 10 mg. In addition, there is another formulation of Miosan that combines cyclobenzaprine with caffeine, which potentiates the relaxing effect of cyclobenzaprine and can be found under the trade name of Miosan Caf.

Miosan should be used with medical indication, by adults only, for a maximum period of 2 to 3 weeks of treatment.

Miosan is indicated for the treatment of muscle pain related to some musculoskeletal diseases such as:

  • Torticollis;
  • Fibromyalgia;
  • Shoulder arthritis;
  • Pain in the lumbar spine;
  • Pain that starts in the neck and radiates to the arm.

Miosan should always be indicated by the doctor evaluating health conditions individually.

How to take

The way to use Miosan is 1 tablet of 5 or 10 mg, orally, 2 to 4 times a day, as directed by the doctor. The maximum dose of Miosan is 60 mg per day and treatment should not exceed a maximum period of 3 weeks.

The tablets should be taken without breaking, without chewing, with a glass of water, before or after food.

If you forget to take a dose at the right time, take it as soon as you remember, but if it is close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and wait for the next time to take it. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed dose.

Possible side effects

The most common side effects of Miosan include drowsiness, excessive tiredness or dizziness and therefore caution should be exercised or activities such as driving, using heavy machinery, performing dangerous activities and avoiding alcohol consumption should be avoided as alcohol use can increase the effects of drowsiness and dizziness.

Also, other side effects of Miosan that can happen during treatment are dry mouth, headache, stomach pain, nausea or constipation. 

who shouldn't use

Miosan should not be used by children under the age of 15, pregnant or breastfeeding women, people with glaucoma, urinary retention, hyperthyroidism, heart problems such as a heart attack, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias or heart block.

Also, Miosan should not be used by people using antidepressant medications, anxiety medications or monoamine oxidase inhibitors such as isocarboxazid, linezolid, phenelzine or selegiline, for example. 

It is important to inform the doctor and pharmacist of all medicines that are used, including supplements or medicinal plants, to avoid increasing the effect of Miosan.
